Civil rights decisions from Supreme Court

T he U.S. Supreme Court handed down key rulings this week on civil rights. The court struck down a key provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, telling Congress it needs to update the formula for requiring pre-clearance of voting rights legislation enacted in nine historically troubled states. In two other rulings, the court advanced civil rights for same-sex couples by striking down a provision of the Defense of Marriage Act and nullifying’s California’s Proposition 8.
