Starting from the Gold Parking Lot at Puyallup’s Washington State Fair, Tour de Pierce offers a fully supported, rolling trip through eastern Pierce County.
Routes of 12, 30 and 50 miles visit rivers, farmland and towns such as Sumner, South Prairie and Orting. While the shorter routes are designed with families and novice riders in mind, the 50-mile course offers three solid climbs.
Riders can start as early as 7:30 a.m. and as late as 11:30. The course closes at 2:30 p.m. The entry fee is $18, $54 family of four, $14 for additional family riders. Proceeds go to Pierce County bicycle education programs.
Helmets are required. Good Samaritan Hospital’s Celebrate Seniority program will sell custom-fit helmets ($7-$10) at the event from 8-11 a.m.
Many South Sound riders use the event as a training ride as a tune up for the July 13-14 Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic. A portion of the 50-mile ride follows the Foothills Trail, but most of the ride is on the road.
There are rest stops with refreshments and restrooms but riders are asked to bring their own water.
