Expect heavy border traffic as Canadians have holiday Monday

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJune 26, 2013

Expect heavy border traffic the next few days because Canadians have a three-day weekend to celebrate their country's birthday.

Canada Day is Monday, July 1, and celebrates that date in 1867 when Canada became a new federation with its own constitution.

The holiday is celebrated across the country with fireworks, picnics and travel, much like America's Independence Day. Government offices and most businesses are closed for the day.

If you are heading to Canada, call ahead to make sure places you plan to visit will be open.

Check border traffic online at wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/border, or call 511.
