A Bellingham man caused a crash that killed a woman just east of Arlington Wednesday evening, June 12, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Carlos Valdes-Arriaga, 31, was driving west on Arlington-Darrington Road at about 6:30 p.m. when he crashed his Ford Explorer into the back of a Chevrolet Metro that was stopped to turn left into a private driveway.
The Metro was pushed into oncoming traffic and was struck by an eastbound tow truck driven by Troy E. Swindler, 24, of Stanwood.
The Metro driver, 23-year-old Brittany N. Shaffer of Arlington, was pronounced dead at the crash scene.
The tow truck driver was uninjured, and Valdes-Arriaga was taken to Cascade Valley Hospital with injuries not considered critical, Trooper Mark Francis said.
Everyone involved had been wearing their seatbelts; troopers do not suspect that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
Troopers are investigating the cause of the crash, and non-criminal charges against Valdes-Arriaga are pending.
