Manson's late-game heroics lift Bellingham Post 7's

Jake Manson had himself a day for the Bellingham Post 7 Senior Legion baseball team.

As if four RBI wasn't enough heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Sehome product stepped up with two outs and the bases loaded and lined a single into the gap, scoring two and beating Skagit Valley Baseball Club 9-8 in walkoff fashion on Thursday, June 6, at Joe Martin Stadium.

"Anytime you have six RBI in a game, something is going good for you," Post 7 coach Jeff Bearden said in a phone interview.

Manson's game-winner capped what was a 3 for 5, six-RBI day, but his late-game heroics weren't without the help of a few teammates.

Lynden product Luke Christianson led off the inning with a bunt single, followed by another bunt single by Aaron Burke. Jeremy Brockmann got on base via yet another infield single, and Bellingham had the bases loaded and no outs.

"I think the bunt base hits by Christianson and Burke that started the bottom of the seventh were huge," Bearden said. "It got everyone going; it got everyone excited."

Two quick outs later and the Post 7's still found themselves facing a three-run deficit, but a walk by Peter Pennylegion and a hit batsman by Dan Goebel brought the score within one.

In comes Manson.

"He came up big for us three times tonight," Bearden said. "He was the right guy and in the right place in the right time."

Pennylegion, Bellingham's speedy leadoff hitter, got on base four out of his five plate appearances, scoring three runs and stealing a base, exactly what a leadoff hitter is supposed to do, Bearden said.

Aside from the offensive explosion, the Post 7's saw some early woes on the mound after scheduled starting pitcher Brice Longanecker couldn't go because of illness. Marshall Weston got the call, but struggled out of the gate.

"It's tough to do that in an emergency situation," Bearden said of starting Weston.

Tyler Knutsen came in relief in the fifth and sixth and locked Skagit down, not allowing an earned run in either inning. Chad Richter came in and sealed the seventh, picking up his first win of the year.
