Pampered pooches prefer pet shops with panache, and Bow Wow & Woofs is exactly that.
The store "where every dog is special" is packed with fashionable sweaters and colorful jackets, styl- ishly fitted harnesses and leashes, carriers, groom- ing supplies and mealtime accessories. There are also comfy dog beds, fun squeaky toys and, of course, doggie décor and gifts for people, too.
Opened in Blaine in 2005 by dog lover and former flight attendant Heather Campbell, the shop moved two years later into Birch Bay Square by Interstate 5, for quick access for out-of-town customers.
"We are an easy stop-off for show dogs on their way from Vancouver to Seattle, and for locals in the county, " Campbell says. "We offer holistic foods, herbs and supplements, and hard-to-find specialty items in the shop and our website."
Campbell visited pet shops worldwide while fly- ing, gathering ideas for her business. It's a friendly
place, where the employees know canine customers by name. Dogs are greeted upon entry, often by the resident cairn terriers, and given personal attention.
"We've become an informational center, " Campbell says.
"Trainers often ask us questions about food issues, or recommendations for treat- ments. Our food and treats are the best. If I wouldn't give it to my own dogs, I won't sell it here."
Purebred pooches aren't the only visitors. Campbell helps rescued dogs find homes, and many return as regular customers. She also has sent boxes of dog treats, "doggles" (doggie goggles), boots and coats to military dogs in Afghanistan, and one year enclosed more than 3,000
Such caring creates lifelong customers, Campbell says.
"As much as you put into it, it gives you back tenfold, " she says. "I love meeting dogs' owners. They are so caring and selfless. Just like their dogs."
