Dalla Santa leads Lyncs to third place finish

The Lynden Christian boys' soccer team scored three goals in the second half to win 3-1 over Okanogan in the Class 1A State Tournament third place game in Sumner on Saturday, May 25.

"Obviously we are thrilled and it was a great finish for our seniors especially," Lynden Christian coach Brent De Ruyter said in a phone interview. "We played a much better 80 minutes today than we did yesterday and possessed the ball fantastically. We really created some good scoring opportunities and were able to minimize their speed because of what Chelan showed us yesterday."

De Ruyter said the team was able to make some adjustments at halftime that allowed them to execute and create the scoring chances.

Cody Fransen got on the scoresheet first off a pass from Toby Dalla Santa in the 46th minute.

"The ball was served out of the back from my brother (Trevor Dalla Santa) and I was able to track it down and flick it across to the opposite post and it was a great 1-2-3 combination," Toby said in a phone interview. "I thought we played much better and bounced back after a tough loss yesterday."

De Ruyter said Fransen was able to find open space and make the runs the team needed today.

Toby then assisted on the next goal to Ben Knibbe in the 50th minute before scoring his own goal in the 72nd.

De Ruyter said Toby was able to score his goal after a corner from Trevor Kamena that Fransen headed towards him.

"Cody headed it on goal and I redirected it with my chest," Toby said. "It wasn't very intentional on my part but it was a great header by him to win it and I just deflected it in."

Toby said he thought the team was able to move the ball well and create opportunities to find the back of the net.

"Toby had a great match again," De Ruyter said. "He has really come up big for us in the playoffs especially and our seniors in general knew this was their last chance to get a win and played with an incredible effort."

Keeper Brady Harvey had five saves in the win for the Lyncs.

"Brady did very well and had two great saves," De Ruyter said. "He made some great decisions on the ball and in the air and played well today. Our defense in general did fantastic outside of that one goal. They made the shots highly contested or from long range and nothing was open. That's the biggest praise for the day."

Okanagan scored in the 77th minute after Brendon Chalmers passed it to Jorge Marquez.

"It's awesome to finish third," Toby said. "It's a little disappointing to lose on Friday but to bounce back is great. It's an achievement and a testament to the hard work that we have put in. The way we have come together is great and we feel blessed to be able to play this weekend and get third place."
