Hoyos, Clawson/Smith reach state semis

Bellingham's Bella Hoyos and the doubles team of Andrea Clawson and Lauren Smith both advanced to the semifinals of the Class 2A State Tennis Tournament on Friday, May 24, in Seattle.

Hoyos won her first match against Michelle Chiou of Hockinson 6-2, 6-1 and then won her second match against Pullman's Stephanie Her 6-2, 6-1.

"She was really solid and didn't make unforced errors," Bellingham coach Steve Chronister said in a phone interview. "Her girls were both scrappy and consistent players and Bella was able to move them around and break them down. She was comfortable in both matches."

Chronister said she didn't win many points via her serve, but won most of her points with accurate ground shots.

Hoyos will play McKenzie Kieser from Selah for a chance at the state title Saturday, May 25, in Seattle.

Clawson and Smith won their first match 6-3, 6-1 over Emily Barclift and McKenzie Click of Tumwater and then won their second match 6-2, 6-1 over Shayla Robinson and Brittani Harvey of Pullman.

"They won both of them pretty handily and played well," Sehome coach Bonna Giller said in a phone interview. "In the first round they started a little slow but once they got on, they went on a roll. Their serve was on and their shot selection was really good."

Giller said she was excited about how they didn't get discouraged during the first match after dropping the first few sets, but fought back and were able to come back.

"They're young and are good about keeping each other in it," Giller said. "They are fighters and have two matches tomorrow and I think they have a really strong chance in both of them."

The duo will play Hockinson's Tiara Atchley and Jaymie Towne on Saturday, May 25.
