Fontes takes second in 1,600

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 25, 2013

Blaine's Eddie Fontes took second in the 1,600 meter race with a time of 4 minutes, 26.65 seconds and Mount Baker's Dillon Quintana (4:28.07) took sixth at the Class 1A State Track and Field Championships in Cheney on Friday, May 24.

"It was one of those races where you try to come up with a plan and he just had an off day," Mount Baker coach Tyler Mitchell said in a phone interview. "Dillon tweaked his back and is more than capable than a 4:15 and just had on off day. We are moving on and eagerly looking for the two mile."

Nathan Dunford took second in the pole vault for the Mountaineers with a mark of 15 feet 9 inches.

"It was a bit frustrating," Mitchell said. "But we're happy to be back at state and on to the next thing. We started at 14-6 and cleared that by two feet and both boys couldn't clear 16 and the other guy had one less scratch."

Blaine and Mount Baker tied for fourth overall as a team after the first day with 11 points and Meridian tied for ninth with nine points.

Gordie Kordas (13-00) took sixth in the pole vault for Blaine and Sam Tanner (12-06) finished 10th for Meridian.

Kaleb Heezen had a mark of 168-02 to take third in the javelin for the Trojans, and Max McGuinn (Meridian) had a mark of 162-10.

Relijah McMillen qualified for the 200 with a time of 23.83 for Meridian.

Blaine's Eddie Fontes and Tom Bradley both qualified for the 800 and both with a time of 2:00.08.

Lummi's Enrique Medina took fifth in the Class 1B 1,600 meter with a time of 4:48.21.

Lummi is tied for 16th on team points with 4.
