Mountaineers knocked out with 10-3 loss

The Mount Baker softball team was unable to come back in its 10-3 loss to Cascade Leavenworth in the consolation second round of the Class 1A Softball State Tournament in Richland on Friday, May 24.

The Mountaineers dropped their first game 22-0 in five innings to Woodland.

"Obviously the first game was ugly," Mount Baker coach Ron Lepper said in a phone interview. "They came out and are a better team than us and hit the ball really well. It didn't matter where we threw it and their pitcher was really good and overpowered us a little bit. But I thought we did a nice job bouncing back in the second game."

Mount Baker was able to win its first consolation round game 14-0 in five innings against Riverview. Aleks Toivola earned the win for the Mountaineers.

Lepper said once the team scored the first run during that second game, the momentum was able to build. Lepper said the momentum carried into the third game, but a few errors swung the momentum away from the Mountaineers.

"We had a few miscues in the second inning with some errors," Lepper said. "The girls scrapped and made some plays but it just didn't go our way."

Toivola had a hit in each the three games and went 3 for 4 with a double in the third game but Mount Baker fell 10-3 to Cascade (Leavenworth).

"The seniors did a nice job leading the girls today," Lepper said. "They all contributed and worked hard in the last game to keep their heads up high."
