Two each from Bellingham, Lynden, Sehome advance to second day action

Six golfers moved on to play in the second round of the Class 2A State boys' golf tournament at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place on Tuesday, May 21.

Bellingham's Taylor Paul shot an 81 and Cody Roth shot an 82 to move on.

"It was a rough day and the course played tough on our guys," Bellingham coach David Bobillot said in a phone interview. "We had some trouble here and there. Cody Roth and Taylor Paul both played solid on the front and ran into some trouble on the back nine and had a couple of blow-up holes. They limped in but survived."

Bobillot said they both could have had much better scores but just weren't able to make the putts they needed to and are about five shots over what they thought they could have been.

Bobillot said Paul was able to get a few birdies and was one under after three holes, but the golf course wore him down.

"It's tough to recover," Bobillot said. "He just couldn't make the putts and that was hard. Golf usually comes down to putting and that was one of the things he didn't do well in on the back nine."

Lynden's Kyle Mark shot an 82 and Ryan Mouche shot an 86 to advance.

"Ryan could have folded his tent after the front nine where he shot a 47," Lynden coach Russ Dorr said in a phone interview. "But he came back and had a 39 on the back and had an eagle on the 12th, which was special, and he made a 10-footer on 18 that put him through. Mark is in a good spot too, but it's a tough golf course."

Sehome's Ben Carroll shot an 83 and Will McCarter shot an 86 to advance to second day action.

Brady Calkins from Chehalis W.F. West shot a 70 to hold the top score of the first day to lead the 41 players that moved on.

"I think the second day is a little easier because they will be thinking of playing golf instead of shooting the best score," Bobillot said. "I'm looking forward to them moving up a little bit. They just like to play and I know they will be out there competing. They just need to play their game and hit a few breaks."
