Grayston, Henderson final Blaine girls' tennis team to fall

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 18, 2013

Blaine's doubles pairing of Emily Grayston and Alex Henderson bowed out of the Class 1A Tri-District girls' tennis tournament at Overlake on Friday, May 17, after losing two of their three matches.

In their opening match, Grayston and Henderson lost the opening set 6-3, but they were able to win the second set, 6-3, but inevitably lost the final set, 6-2.

"Every match in the first round went three sets," Blaine coach John Freal said in a phone interview. "It was a really high quality field that they played against."

Freal thought the second set of their opening-match loss was the best set they played the entire tournament.

The pairing bounced back after the opening loss to defeat the pairing of Emily Ge and Emily Gass from Charles Wright Academy in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.

"They served well, volleyed well and withstood a bit of pressure late," Freal said.

Nevertheless, the Blaine duo saw its season come to end at the hands of Stephanie Stacy and Katya Kelly from Charles Wright in a straight-set loss.

"That's as far as we've been in a while," Freal said of his team's performance this year. "It's been a good season for us."
