Whatcom candidates file for 2013 elections

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 17, 2013

This year the old saying is true: All politics is local.

Voters in Whatcom County have only local candidates to consider, for city councils, school boards, fire commissions and hospital and water districts, among other offices.

Of 15 school board seats up for election across the county, only one is contested. Bellingham School Board member Steve Smith drew two opponents one week after voting to close Larrabee Elementary School. He will face John Blethen and Hue Beattie in the primary.

All four Whatcom County Council members up for re-election have a challenger, and both open seats on the Bellingham City Council will be contested this fall.

Barry Buchanan, who announced in March for Bellingham City Council, said early this week he had changed his mind and would file to run against Kathy Kershner on the County Council.

That is nothing new for Buchanan, who initially announced in 2011 that he would oppose Dan Pike for Bellingham mayor but retreated after Kelli Linville chose to run.

"I really felt she had the best chance to win that election," Buchanan said.

He ran instead to keep his seat on the City Council and lost to Cathy Lehman.

The handful of races with three or more candidates will be on the ballot for the primary election Aug. 7. Those include the Port of Bellingham District 1 race to replace Scott Walker, who is not running again, and the Bellingham City Council at-large seat.

Two-person races and the top two from the primaries advance to the general election Nov. 6.
