Adams highlights strong day for girls at Class 1A track prelims


Blaine's Olivia Adams earned a bid to the Class 1A state track meet after posting a winning mark of 11 feet, 3 inches in the pole vault at the Class 1A Tri-District preliminaries on Thursday, May 16, at King's High School.

Adams bested Mount Baker's Katherine Dunford, Nooksack Valley's Megan Perry and Rachael McKinstry of Blaine for the win, although all four will compete at the state meet which begins on Thursday, May 23, at Mount Tahoma High School.

The 3,200 finale yielded two more Whatcom County runners with bids to state. Mount Baker's Kelsie Nern and Meridian's McKenzie Roque finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Leyla Marino and Nicole Hofbauer will join Roque, their fellow Meridian teammate at state after finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump. Marino edged Hofbauer for fifth by one inch.

Anna Ratzlaff was Meridian's final competitor to earn a bid to state after finishing sixth in the shot put with a mark of 32-05.00.

Lynden Christian's Morgan Van Kooten was the Lyncs' lone competitor to earn a berth to state on Thursday after finishing second in the shot put with a mark of 37-02.50. Blaine's Malie Laolagi earned her berth to state after finishing fifth in the shot put behind Van Kooten.

The rest of the finales for the Class 1A Tri-Districts will be finished on Saturday, May 18.
