LC softball stage late rally

A furious late-inning charge by the Lynden Christian softball team pushed the Lyncs past Chimacum 7-2 on Wednesday, May 15, in the Class 1A Tri-District tournament at Chimicum.

Despite the inability to score until the top half of the sixth inning, Lynden Christian, behind the dominant pitching performance of starter Bridget Kruck, found itself tied 1-1 entering the seventh inning.

"We wanted her to challenge the hitters, and she did," Lynden Christian coach Mitch Moorlag said of his starting pitcher in a phone interview.

The tide turned for the Lyncs after they opened up the top of the seventh with a string of eight consecutive hits, including back-to-back triples by Lexi Vander Griend and Jenah Korthuis that led to a six-run seventh.

"Jenah's triple seemed to relax the whole group," Moorlag said. "... And then we had (six) straight hits, and that got the ball rolling a bit."

Lynden Christian advances to play University Prep on Saturday, May 18, in the second round of the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament. The Lyncs have to win two more loser-out games to advance to the state tournament.
