Red Raiders take district tournament

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 15, 2013

The Bellingham boys' golf team claimed the Class 2A Northwest District Championships at the Snohomish Golf Course on Tuesday, May 14.

Leading the Red Raiders were Cody Roth and Taylor Powell, who shot a 71 and 73, respectively. Also joining Roth and Powell at the state championships will be Peter Kolodychuk and E.J. Troutmam, while Reese Kruhlik qualified as the first alternate.

Lynden will send three golfers to state, plus an alternate.

Lynden finished behind Bellingham in the overall team title.

"We had a great tournament," Lynden coach Russ Dorr said in a phone interview. "We were second in the district behind Bellingham, and Bellingham deserved it."

Kyle Mark's 77 on the second day of competition firmly planted him in the state tournament while also knotting up a seventh-place individual finish.

"He really worked hard for that 77 today," Dorr said. "He finished strong. He always tends to suck it up the last few holes when he needs to."

Joining Marks will be Michael Olson and Ryan Mouche.

Sehome had two golfers advance to state. Ben Carroll finished third overall with a two-day total of 148, while William McCarter finished in a three-way tie for 16th at 161 and managed to grab the last spot to advance in a playoff.

The Class 2A State Championships begin Tuesday, May 21, at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place.
