OLYMPIA: Monday rides serve as intro to road cycling

May 12, 2013

The Capital Bicycling Club of Olympia has started a new ride for cyclists who want to learn more about road cycling. The weekly rides will offer a primer on hand signals, basic safety skills and being seen on the road by motorists.

Michelle Kautzman and Jenny Mercer will lead the ride, offering practical road cycling skills and the chance to practice them on the road.

The rides take place each Monday through Sept. 2.

The ride is actually a two-part event.

First-time participants should meet at 5:30 p.m. at Joy Ride Bikes, 1225 Ruddell Road SE, Suite D, Lacey, for a skills training ride with Kautzman to the Sears parking lot at South Sound Center.

At 6 p.m., Mercer will lead more practiced riders to the Sears lot to join up with the people finishing skills training.

From there, the group will ride together for 13-17 miles at a fairly easy pace. The group will ride together for 1-11/2 hours each week, depending upon the amount of daylight.

For information, send an email to mtkkautzmann@yahoo.com or call the bike shop at 360-480-0196.
