Whatcom County firefighters host 5k run, 2-mile walk

BELLINGHAM - A race-walk next week benefits two local organizations: one that helps those who've suffered the death of a loved one and another that promotes fire prevention and other safety issues for children.

The Haulin' Axe Run and Walk is a 5k run or 2-mile walk put on by the nonprofit firefighter associations of North Whatcom Fire & Rescue and Whatcom County Fire District 4 to raise money for local charities. It was started in 2011.

This year's event is 9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 19. Tax-deductible registration is $35. It starts at the Barkley Haggen and ends at Bloedel Donovan Park.

All proceeds benefit Firefighters For Fun, which promotes child safety, and the Support Officer Community Care program, which provides volunteer grief assistance immediately after a sudden or traumatic death. More information about these groups is at the Firefighters For Fun Facebook page and at supportofficer.org.

For more information about the race, and to register, go online to haulinaxe.com.
