Grayston, Henderson win 1A District's doubles title

Blaine's Emily Grayston and Alex Henderson won the Class 1A Sub-District doubles championship at South Whidbey on Thursday, May 9.

"They played this team in the finals earlier in the season and lost a tough match in three sets," Blaine coach John Freal said in a phone interview. "They weren't playing their best then. I think in the first set this time both teams played hard, Emily and Alex just played better and got confident and went on to win quite easily in the final set."

Grayston and Henderson won three matches to earn the championship and the automatic berth to the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament on Friday, May 17, in Seattle.

Grayston and Henderson won their first set 6-0, 6-0 over Samantha Martin and Sydney Autio from Coupeville. They then went on to defeat Isla Dubendorf and Hannah Calderwood of South Whidbey 6-0, 6-2 in the second round and then defeated Tess Radisch and Amelia Weeks from South Whidbey 7-5, 6-1 in the championship match.

Blaine's other doubles team of Alicia Allison and Shirin Roth-Lerner will play for third place, and an alternate position for Tri-Districts, on Saturday, May 11, against Dubendorf/Calderwood.

Allison and Roth-Lerner won their first match 6-0, 6-3 over Holly Craggs and Emily Gallahar of Coupeville but lost in the second round to Radisch and Weeks 6-3, 7-5. They went on to defeat Maddy Marinkovich and Roxanne Bormann of Friday Harbor 6-0, 6-3 in the second consolation round.

Saskia Dolk was able to win her first singles match 6-1, 6-1 over Abigail Steele of Nooksack Valley but then lost 6-1, 6-0 to Carlie Newman of South Whidbey. She met Blaine's Elizabeth Berry in the second consolation round and won 7-5, 6-1 to advance to the third place game.

Berry lost her first round match to Coupeville's Amanda D'Almeida 6-1, 6-4 but won the first consolation round 6-1, 6-1 against Kristina Wakeman of Friday Harbor.
