Nooksack outlast LC 7-6

The Nooksack Valley softball team staved off a late surge by Lynden Christian to defeat the Lyncs 7-6 on Wednesday, May 8, at Lynden Christian in a Northwest Conference game.

The Pioneers opened with two runs in each of the first two innings, putting Lynden Christian in an early 4-0 hole. The Lyncs, though, answered back with a four-run bottom of the second to even it up, but runs in the fourth and sixth gave Nooksack the 7-4 advantage it took into the seventh.

"Both teams played really well," Lynden Christian coach Mitch Moorlag said in a phone interview. "Fantastic defensive plays were made on both sides."

In the bottom of the seventh trailing by three, the Lyncs managed a two-run rally but fell short. Regardless, Moorlag liked what he saw of his team, and specifically second baseman Lexi Vander Griend.

"Offensively, she was all over the field ... just fantastic," he said. "She followed up a double play with a diving stop and threw it to first from her back."

Vander Griend was 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored.

Kayla Struiksma picked up the win for the Pioneers, and McKinna Larson added a two-run home run and three RBI.

This was the final game of the regular season for both Lynden Christian (6-14, NWC 2-10) and Nooksack Valley (12-8, NWC 6-6).
