Flint, Pittis shine at 2A/3A sub-district

Squalicum's Gina Flint set the 2A state-leading shot put throw with a mark of 46-07.50 on Wednesday, May 8, at the Class 2A/3A Sub-District Tournament at Civic Stadium.

With the toss, Flint, along with Sehome's Chanelle Eddy, Bodie Medler and Alia Jones booked their bids to the the 2A District 1 & 2 Bi-District meet. Lynden's Kayla Bajema rounded out the group with an eighth-place finish in the event.

Sehome's Emily Pittis had an equally impressive day at the Sub-District Tournament, grabbing first in the 1,600 with a time of 5:03.37, which is the fastest 2A time of the year. Bekah Jensen, Mia Hodges, Leah Veldhuisen of Bellingham and Abigail Cybula and Alexa Shindruk of Lynden will also join Pittis at the Bi-District meet.

Bellingham got another strong performance from Olivia Halverson in both the high jump and the javelin. Halverson took home top marks in the high jump with a mark of 5-00.00 while also taking second in the javelin with a throw of 111-07. Lynden's Shelby Jacob placed first in the javelin with a toss of 124-03.

Rounding out the winners on the day was Squalicum's Zoe Peterson in the triple jump. Peterson placed a mark of 34-11, just ahead of Sehome's Jessa Clark (34-07.50) and fellow Squalicum teammate Grace Slater (33-09.75).

Ferndale athletes must wait to see if they qualified to move on depending on how Wesco athletes performed at the Class 3A District meet. Top showers for the Golden Eagles included Vernelle Johnson in the shot put (30-08.00), McKenna Rybka in the javelin (92-10), Emma Bennett in the high jump (4-10.00) and Makalee Latta in the triple jump (33-00).
