Early goals help Baker advance

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMay 8, 2013

The Mount Baker boys' soccer team defeated Bellevue Christian 3-1 in the opening round of the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament on Tuesday, May 7, at Sammamish High School.

It didn't take long for the Mountaineers to take command of the game, as Alex Tyska scored off an assist by Roman Vetkov in only the fifth minute to take a 1-0 lead. The pairing would come together again just 13 minutes later, but this time Vetkov scored off a feed from Tyska.

"The two were able to knock a couple passes back and forth which gave Alex a couple one-on-one opportunities that led to the goal," Mount Baker coach Jason Jorgensen said in a phone interview.

Jonah Graff scored for Bellevue Christian in the 50th minute, but a goal by Walter Smith in the 53rd minute cemented a matchup between Cascade Christian in the second round on Thursday, May 8, at Sammamish.

"The guys came out with a lot of energy tonight," Jorgensen said. "It was one of those must-win gams, and they came out with a lot of energy.

"They attacked the goal, and the defense played really ... and they ended up bringing that momentum into halftime."

The Mountaineers outshot their opponents 18-16, but Bellevue Christian rarely had clean looks as Bryce Logan was only forced to make three saves in the contest.
