Bellingham sends five into third round

The Bellingham girls' tennis team saw three singles players and two doubles pairs advance to the third round of the Class 2A North Sub-District Tournament on Tuesday, May 7.

The third round will be held on Wednesday, May 8, at Sehome.

Bella Hoyos was her typical dominant self, defeating Amy Schols from Sedro-Woolley 6-0, 6-0. Lynden's Devon Kollmyer also advanced into the third round of singles play after an eventful three-set win over Sehome's Nicola Morrow, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Mariah Miller and Kira Vazorka also advanced into the third round of singles play for Bellingham.

"Bella won her match pretty comfortably," Red Raiders coach Steve Chronister said in a phone interview. "Kristen Chalmers (Sehome) and Kira Vazorka played for three hours... two brave girls were out there a long time."

In doubles, Sehome's pairing of Andrea Clawson and Lauren Smith defeated Lynden's pairing of Kelsey Hewson and Alex Schulhauser 6-0, 6-2. Two other pairings from Sehome - Madison Harris and Taylor Harris, and Simon Hall and Lizzie Friesen - also advanced into the third round of doubles play.

Bellingham's Tess Owen and Cari Pearsall had to play themselves into the second round with an early win, and the two kept up the strong play into the afternoon defeating the pairing of Alley Calkins and Allison Perry from Burlington-Edison 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Catie Welch and Kate Troutman also advanced into the third round for the Red Raiders after a tough three-set win.

Three singles players make it into the final eight. Bella, she won her match pretty comfortably, two kids, just finished at 8:37, Kara Vazorka Christine Chalmers played for three hours, and Vazorka two brave girls they were out there a long time. Mariah Milller had an upset win, she beat the six seed, Kirsten Powell, Mariah won that 7-6 6-3, so those were our three singles that made it in. We had two doubles all of htem were three set matches. We beat a coule teams that have given us probkems this.

Welch: They beat the dor sisters from Squalicum, Kari Pearsall/tess owne upset a team from Burlington that have beat us both times this year, and they have given us fits today. Karia and tesss were not seeded, and then they uset. Perfect.
