The Nooksack Valley softball team struck quick against Bellingham, scoring 11 runs in the first inning en route to an 11-0 win on Tuesday, May 7, at Bellingham in a Northwest Conference game.
In addition to the strong win, Kayla Struiksma, Alexis Pike and Olivia Berkan combined to hold the Red Raiders hitless through the five-inning affair.
"They did a good job making pitches, and they did an excellent job of hitting their locations," Nooksack Valley coach Tom Harmon said in a phone interview.
Bellingham's inability to find the strike zone in the first turned out to be its Achilles heel, Harmon said.
"This team struggled for them to find control," Harmon said. "After that, they found control and they were able to make outs."
Chloe Gardner supplied much of the offense for the Pioneers, going 1 for 2 with a triple and three RBI.
Both Bellingham (0-16, NWC 0-11) and Nooksack Valley (11-8, NWC 5-6) play on Wednesday, May 8, with the Red Raiders facing Ferndale and the Pioneers traveling to Lynden Christian.
