Lynden captures NWC title in 9-1 win

The Lynden softball team captured the Northwest Conference championship Tuesday, May 7, with a 9-1 win over Ferndale at Lynden.

Brooke Bonsen was masterful in the circle, picking up her 14th win of the season while throwing a complete-game, five-hitter.

"The key with her is the first inning," Lynden coach Steve Petersen said in a phone interview. "If she can get out and get rolling in the first, she can be really successful."

Bonsen also helped her cause at the plate, going 3 for 3 with an RBI. Tanna Benson added three hits of her own, including a double and an RBI.

"We were really fortunate that we came out and put some pretty good swings with runners on base," Petersen said.

Ferndale got a solid 2 for 2 outing from Corrie Wilson, and Collette Brown added a double and the lone RBI for the Golden Eagles.

Ferndale (12-7, NWC 8-3) hosts Bellingham on Wednesday, May 8, while Lynden (15-4, 11-1) plays its final game against Orcas Island on Friday, May 10.
