Bauthues tosses gem as Ferndale advances

Backed by a terrific pitching performance by Brady Bauthues, the Ferndale baseball team defeated Mountlake Terrace 2-0 in the first round of the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament on Saturday, May 4.

With the win, the Golden Eagles advance to play Shorewood in the semifinals on Tuesday, May 7, at Meridian Park Fields.

Bauthues was in rare form, throwing seven scoreless innings while allowing just six hits and striking out five. He also dispensed of the leadoff batter all seven innings.

"He was in the strike zone a bunch, and he was really competitive from the first pitch all the way through," Ferndale coach Donny Hennigs said in a phone interview.

Bauthues also helped his cause at the plate, hitting a two-out, two-run single in the third to score Ferndale's only runs.

"It helped him pitching-wise," Hennigs said. "He took over from that time on."

Defensively, the Golden Eagles didn't commit a single error leading to an overall clean effort.

"It was a complete team effort," Hennigs said. "We didn't have any errors, so that helped with no extra base runners."
