Lynden softball takes two during doubleheader against Blaine

Both Brooke Bonsen and Tanna Benson had big games in the pitching circle and at the plate to help the Lynden softball team sweep a doubleheader against Blaine Friday, May 3, at Pipeline Fields.

The Lions beat the Borderites 14-0 in six innings during the first game, a Northwest Conference meeting, and Lynden took the second game 12-2, also in six innings.

"They are a No. 1 seed in the 1A and a really good team," Lynden coach Steve Petersen said of Blaine in a phone interview. "We had one of those nights where we kind of put everything together. We were pitching, playing defense and hitting. We were really focused, and it's good to get out of Blaine with two wins."

Bonsen added her 13th win of the season by throwing a two-hit shutout in the first matchup. She helped her own cause with a 2 for 4 game at the plate. Taylor Van Dalen and Hannah Rothwell also had multi-hit games.

"It was one of those games Brooke was throwing the ball where she wanted, and she was really on tonight," Petersen said.

Lynden led 6-0 heading into the top of the sixth, but the Lions scored eight runs against pitcher Hanna Kiele, who was working in relief for starter Ashley Bolick.

"It was a combination of base on balls, some mistakes and a couple of hard-hit balls," Petersen said of Lynden's eight-run sixth.

Benson threw game two and was almost equally as impressive as Bonsen was in game one. She earned the win, giving up two runs on seven hits. Benson also went 3 for 5 at the plate, and Rothwell added two more hits to go 4 for 7 on the day.

Borderites catcher Lexi Greguski and Bolick recorded five of Blaine's seven hits in the second game.

Blaine (12-6, 7-4 NWC) travels to play Sedro-Woolley next at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at Janicki Fields, while Lynden (14-3, 10-0) also plays Sedro-Woolley next at 4 p.m. Monday, May 6, at Lynden High School.
