Behind Truman Van Dalen's dominant pitching performance, the Lynden Christian baseball team defeated Coupeville 2-1 in the Class 1A Northwest Conference Tournament first round on Wednesday, May 1, at Coupeville.
Van Dalen tossed a complete game while striking out five and allowing just five hits against the No. 2-seeded Wolves.
"Truman just pitched a gem tonight," Lynden Christian coach Desi Luna said in a phone interview. "He kept us in the game just enough."
Van Dalen ran into some trouble in the seventh inning with runners on second and third with two outs, but struck out the final hitter of the game looking.
Jamie Heystek provided the offense with a two-out, two-run double in the second.
"Any time you get on the board first on the road, it's huge for the pitcher," Luna said.
The Lyncs (8-12) advance to the second round where they will face Meridian on Thursday, May 2, at Pipeline Field.
