Ferndale earns second win, 4-3 over Blaine

The Ferndale girls' tennis team earned its second Northwest Conference win after defeating Blaine 4-3 at home Tuesday, April 30.

"Each player improved each set," Ferndale coach Rudy Vendiola said in a phone interview. "We got stronger every set and I was pleased with that. First singles was the big match that went on the longest. I was really pleased with (Jamie Pettinger's) performance."

Pettinger defeated Saskia Dolk 7-5, 6-7, 6-2 for the Golden Eagles (2-6 NWC, 2-12).

Blaine (2-5 NWC, 6-9) was led by Emily Grayston and Alex Henderson, who won the first doubles match 6-0, 6-3 over Cassidy Newman and Lauren Mattaini.

Blaine hosts Anacortes in its final match Wednesday, May 1.

Doubles: Emily Grayston/Alex Henderson (Blaine) def. Cassidy Newman/Lauren Mattaini (Ferndale) 6-0 6-3; Carly Bannerman/Shelby Slaughter (Ferndale) def. Mandy Hayes/Emily Roe (Blaine) 2-6, 7-5, 6-4; Shirin Roth-Lerner/ Hope Wilkett (Blaine) def. Ally Bagley/Sydney Cutsforth (Ferndale) 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
