WWU ends season with split at MSUB

All-star catcher Jackie Rothenberger ended her four-year career on a high note by going 3 for 4 as Western Washington University completed its season with a 13-9 win over Montana State University Billings on Sunday, April 28, during the nightcap of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader played at Bjorgum Field.

The Vikings finished 23-23 overall and 12-12 in league play. MSUB, which won the opener 8-4, closed out its campaign 12-29 overall and 10-14 in conference action.

In the second contest, WWU led 12-1 after three innings, only to have the Yellowjackets score eight runs over the next four innings.

Rothenberger had a double and two singles and scored three runs as the Vikings tallied four runs in the second and eight in the third.

WWU's Meghan Carrillo and Haylee Baker each had two hits and drove in two runs. Rachelle Berry hit a two-run homer in the third and Kristen Allen had a solo shot to lead off the seventh.

MSUB made it interesting by scoring three runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the seventh.

It was the fifth double-figure scoring game of the season for the Vikings, who had 13 hits. MSUB finished with 14.

In the first game, WWU went out to an early lead with four runs in the second.

Jordan Walley hit a leadoff homer, her team-leading sixth of the season. Melissa Becker singled across another run and Allen had a two-run double.

But MSUB scored one run in the third, five in the fourth and two in the fifth. All of them were unearned as the Vikings committed seven errors.
