Dalla Santa sends LC into postseason on positive note

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDApril 28, 2013

Toby Dalla Santa scored a pair of goals two minutes apart and the Lynden Christian boys' soccer team showed crisp passing in its regular-season finale, grabbing a 2-0 non-conference victory over visiting Friday Harbor on Saturday, April 27.

Dalla Santa scored in the 53rd minute off an assist from Luke Reardon on a corner kick, before adding a second in the 55th minute off an assist from Ben Knibbe.

"He (Dalla Santa) did real well," LC coach Brent De Ruyter said in a phone interview. "Luke played real well, too. They played well as a tandem. I thought we really possessed the ball well. That was the big thing. We got our completion number right around 75 percent for the whole match. I was proud of the way we kept our focus the whole way."

The Lyncs (8-5-3) had already wrapped up the Northwest Conference's top seed into this week's Class 1A Northwest District Tournament, but Saturday's loss eliminated the Wolverines and guaranteed Blaine a spot in the tournament, De Ruyter said.

LC will host Coupeville in a first-round elimination game at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1.

"It's going to be a blast," De Ruyter said of the district tournament. "We're thrilled to be hosting a Wednesday loser out. That's always a huge advantage. Coupeville played King's to overtime last night, so we know we're going to have a battle on our hands. There are a lot of pretty even teams, so we have to bring it every night."
