Baker trumps Meridian for second place

The Mount Baker boys' soccer team leaped over Meridian to grab the second seed out of the Northwest Conference into the Class 1A Northwest District Tournament after beating the Trojans 3-0 on Saturday, April 27, at Mount Baker.

With the win, the Mountaineers (8-7-1, 5-6-1 NWC) secured a home playoff game on Wednesday, May 1, against NWC No. 4 seed Nooksack Valley. As the No. 3 seed, Meridian (5-6-5, 3-4-5) also will host a first-round elimination game in the district tournament on Wednesday, but it will be against Cascade Conference No. 2 King's.

Roman Vetkov was particularly active in Saturday's win for Mount Baker, scoring twice and assisting on the other goal by Tim Tikhonov.

"He had a little spark inside him today," Mount Baker coach Jason Jorgensen said in a phone interview. "He just had good movement off the ball, trying to find the open lane behind Meridian's defense."

Jorgensen also was pleased with the way his defense shut out Meridian.

"The back line played really well," he said. "Bryce Logan made some really nice saves today."
