Squalicum dominates in doubles, wins 6-1

The Squalicum girls' tennis team defeated Anacortes 6-1 on Thursday, April 25, in a Northwest Conference matchup at Squalicum.

After dropping the first singles match, the Storm reeled off the final six matches, including straight-set wins in all three doubles.

"I was very pleased with our doubles today," Squalicum coach Joe O'Brien said in a phone interview. "We had a really strong showing in doubles, and Makena DeGolier and Zoe Roberts played really good, solid tennis."

Tirsa Randall-Grutter also came away with an impressive three-set win, 2-6 6-2 6-1 - her first three-set match of the year.

"After dropping that first set, she really played a determined second and third set," O'Brien said.

Singles: Paola Jurkovich (Anacortes) def. Kirsten Powell (Squalicum) 6-3 7-6 (7-4), Lindsey Belcher (Squalicum) def. Jolie Jurkovich (Anacortes) 2-6 6-0 1-0 (8-6), Tirsa Randall-Grutter (Squalicum) def. Carly Anderson (Anacortes) 2-6 6-2 6-1; Sarah Byron (Squalicum) def. Colleen Anderson (Anacortes) 6-3 6-1.

Doubles: Makena DeGolier Zoe Roberts (Squalicum) def. Kylee Berth/Ashleigh Neitzel (Anacortes) 6-3 6-4; Kim Dorr/Rachel Dorr (Squalicum) def. Miranda Mallard/Killian McCown (Anacortes) 6-0 6-1; Ali Anders/Claire Jackson (Squalicum) def. Maria Dale/Quianna Locicero (Anacortes) 6-4 6-2.
