Here's a list of some major local construction projects either underway or expected to get started this summer. All are in Bellingham unless otherwise noted.
Springfield Suites/Marriott Hotel on Northwest Avenue. Expected to be finished around August.
La Quinta hotel on West Bakerview Road near Fred Meyer. Expected to be finished later this year.
Cornerstone Building, Barkley Village (on corner of Newmarket Street). Initial work began last week. Expected to be completed in spring 2014.
Morse Square Apartments, 1020 Railroad Ave. Construction underway.
Residential building at 835 N. State St. Construction of the 38-unit building is underway.
Kwina Village Apartments, Lummi Housing Authority, 2828 Kwina Road, Lummi Reservation. Infrastructure work expected later this year; construction of the buildings for the 62-unit second phase not expected to begin until early 2014.
Silver Reef expansion, Lummi Reservation. Official opening of new conference area, restaurant on Thursday, May 9.
Bellingham airport expansion. Underway, expected to be finished in January 2014.
Remodel of Bakerview and Lakeway Fred Meyer stores. Work underway. Cost for both stores is about $7.5 million.
WinCo (East Bellis Fair Parkway). Building permits issued for $7 million in remodeling work.
Bellis Fair. Renovations underway, expected to be completed by November.
Western Washington University
Carver Gymnasium building remodel, on campus. If funded by the state, the $69.3 million project is expected to begin in August.
Mathes Residence Hall Renovation, phase 2: $5.8 million, expected to start work in June.
Fraser Hall Renovation: $4.9 million project underway, expected to be completed in August.
Ridgeway Alpha Residence Hall Renovation: $2.67 million, expected to start in June.
Northwest Indian College
Coast Salish Institute, on campus near Kwina Road, Lummi Reservation. Construction of 12,710-square-foot building is expected to start in May and be finished in June 2014. Cost expected around $5.5 million.
Library and technology building. Construction is underway on the nearly 11,000-square-foot, approximately $3 million facility, scheduled to be completed by January 2014.
Bellingham Technical College
Perry Center for Fisheries & Aquatic Sciences, 1600 C St. The $4 million facility is expected to be ready in September.
Whatcom Community College
Health Professions Education Center, Cordata Business Park. Projected as a $5.5 million project, it is expected to be completed this fall.
Local school districts
Birchwood Elementary, 3200 Pinewood Ave., Bellingham. Construction expected to begin this spring, be completed by fall 2014.
Meridian elementary school, 960 E. Hemmi Road. Scheduled to be ready at the end of 2013.
Blaine High School science building remodel. The nearly $1.9 million project expected to start in June, be ready for fall classes.
Lynden Water Treatment Plant, 800 S. 6th St. Tabbed at around $27 million, construction is expected to begin in June.
