Baker strikes late goal to top Blaine 2-1

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDApril 20, 2013

A goal in the final moments by Alex Tyska pushed the Mount Baker boys' soccer team over Blaine 2-1 on Friday, April 19, in a Northwest Conference match at Blaine.

"It's a tough loss," Blaine coach Mike Couto said in a phone interview. "The last couple of minutes, they fought and Blaine relaxed a bit."

Mount Baker's Austin Makela scored the Mountaineers' other goal in the second minute of play off an assist by Zan Roman.

"Obviously we were sleeping in the beginning," Couto said. "Baker had a great first half, controlling the possession of the ball. But Blaine had complete control in the second half."

The Borderites knotted the game up at 1-1 after a goal by Kai Griffin in the 50th minute, but they failed to translate steady pressure into another goal, Couto said.

Blaine (2-11-0, NWC 1-9) travels to Friday Harbor on Saturday, April 20, while Mount Baker (6-6-1, NWC 3-5-1) plays Squalicum at Whatcom Community College on Tuesday, April 23.
