Lions softball beats Seahawks to remain unbeaten in conference

Lynden softball maintained its perfect league record with a 5-4 Northwest Conference win against Anacortes during a matchup of the top two teams in the conference standings Wednesday, April 17, at Lynden High School.

The Lions handed the Seahawks their first league loss, snapping their five-game win streak. Lynden extended its win streak to five, playing its second game in as many days.

"It's a good win anytime you can beat Anacortes," Lynden coach Steve Petersen said in a phone interview. "They play really good defense and bat one through nine really well."

Lions catcher Mandy Warner went 2 for 4 with three runs scored, and Tanna Benson drove in two runs. Brooke Bonsen won her ninth straight game, despite Lynden being outhit 11 to six.

Petersen said right fielder Hannah Rothwell's ability to throw out a runner at home plate when the score was 2-2 in the fourth inning was one of the biggest plays of the game.

Lynden (9-3, 6-0 NWC) hosts Mount Baker next at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 18.
