Squalicum tops Lynden 5-2


The Squalicum girls' tennis team edged Lynden 5-2 on Wednesday, April 17, in a Northwest Conference league match.

Lynden's Devin Kollmyer and Squalicum's Kirsten Powell squared off in the No. 1 singles match. After a back and forth affair, Kollmyer was able to pull out the tough three set win, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5) despite trailing the final set 2-5.

"It was an amazing last set," Lynden coach Trey Ballard said in a phone interview.

The Storm rallied after the opening loss to win the final three singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 win by Tirsa Randall-Grutter.

"The just played really well," Ballard said in a phone interview. "They looked better than the first time we played them."

Lynden (1-6, NWC 0-2) hosts Blaine on Thursday, April 18, while Squalicum (5-3, NWC 2-2) welcomes Anacortes on Friday, April 19. Both are NWC league matches.
