New ways to pay Whatcom Transportation Authority fares could be approved at a Thursday, April 18, meeting of the agency's board of directors.
The base fare would remain $1 per ride. Tokens and free-ride coupons would be replaced by a $3 day pass and an 11-ride ticket for $10. WTA staff decided over the past month to offer an 11-ride ticket instead of a 10-ride ticket.
The day pass could be purchased from bus drivers.
Another change WTA made since public comments at a March hearing was to increase the number of free day passes for social service agencies to 50,000 from 30,000. This would address concerns over the elimination of tokens, WTA staff said.
All of the changes require board approval, which could come at the 8 a.m. meeting in Whatcom County Council chambers, 311 Grand Ave., Bellingham.
The new payment methods would go into effect with the installation of new fare boxes on buses by the end of the year, WTA officials have said.
