Business owner Bill Knutzen will defend his seat on the Whatcom County Council. The 51-year-old Lynden resident announced his campaign for a second term on Monday, April 15.
Knutzen says he entered the council four years ago to protect farmers' interests. He has proved to be on the side of foresters and developers, opposing planning decisions that would limit their options.
He opposed the reconveyance, an 8,844-acre land transfer around Lake Whatcom that will turn commercial timberland into a park. He also has resisted years of legal challenges to county rules that expanded rural development.
Knutzen was the author this year of new county code establishing a Forestry Advisory Committee.
One challenger to Knutzen's at-large position has surfaced so far: Rud Browne, founder of the electronics recycling company Ryzex.
