Michelle Luke of Lummi Island will make another run at the Whatcom County Council seat held by Carl Weimer.
Since her narrow loss to Weimer in 2009, Luke, 60, was appointed to the county Planning Commission. Her inroad into government has been through land-use planning, starting in 2004 with the Lummi Island sub-area plan.
Luke favors a small-scale slaughterhouse industry on agricultural land. Council members have spent almost a year so far figuring out how that will work.
"I'm glad this is getting more time, but I do think there can be and should be a way to permit this so it's workable," Luke said.
As planning commissioner, Luke is working on another major growth decision that will come before the council: a legal challenge to the county's growth rules in rural areas.
Individual property owners are being hurt by a push from the challengers for stricter rules, Luke said.
"You want to be in compliance (with the Growth Management Act), but it goes against common sense."
