SUDDEN VALLEY - South Whatcom Fire Authority has received a $147,016 equipment grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Fire Chief Dave Ralston said the department learned of the award last week. The department's 2012 application was for purchasing protective equipment and pagers for its firefighters, who serve the areas of Chuckanut Drive, Lake Samish, Yew Street Road, Geneva and Sudden Valley.
The grant will replace 50 sets of protective "turnout" gear that is more than 10 years old and also will purchase 50 new pagers.
"We were thrilled to hear that our application was being looked at several weeks ago and very grateful that we received the award," Ralston said.
This is the first FEMA equipment grant that the fire authority has received since its formation in 2009. The department has applied for aid three years in a row.
