I am a frequent Bellingham runner, and the reference to a bike/pedestrian path in your recent article about living-wage waterfront jobs drew my attention. I must admit that I am not well-schooled in the content of different waterfront redevelopment plans. Nevertheless, I feel that the lack of an unbroken, accessible bike/pedestrian path in a redeveloped Bellingham waterfront would be a terrible loss of opportunity. I have enjoyed running on such paths in cities like San Diego and Wenatchee. The current trail system through Fairhaven, Boulevard Park, Bellweather, and Zuanich Park gets us most of the way there, but the route is fractured and unmarked in places. In my view, such a route need not hug the shoreline every step of the way, so long is it is continuous and safely marked. I strongly feel that an unbroken Bellingham waterfront recreational path would be a treasure our community would value and enjoy for generations to come.
