An entrepreneur says he would bring first-hand experience with job creation to the Whatcom County Council.
Rud Browne, founder of a local business that refurbishes barcode scanners and other electronics, announced Tuesday, April 9, that he will seek the at-large position on the council. The seat is held by Bill Knutzen, who has not said whether he plans to run again.
In his statement, Browne said county government could encourage industries appropriate for rural counties, such as hospitality, recreation, software and engineering.
Browne, 54, sold his company, Ryzex, in December 2011, in part to pursue his interests in economic and environmental sustainability. He founded Ryanna LLC, which he said will invest in clean-tech startups.
Browne signed a petition of business owners supporting the state-to-county land transfer around Lake Whatcom to create a forested park. He said the recreational opportunities created by the park would help the local economy.
