MAPLE FALLS - A woman's body was recovered from a creek off the Nooksack River late Monday, April 8.
Investigators have found no signs of foul play in the death of Kelly Ann Cowles, 54, of Whatcom County. She and her husband, Marcus, had parked their pickup truck along the side of Mount Baker Highway to drink alcohol, said Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks. She left for a moment to relieve herself but never returned.
Marcus got help to search for her. At 9:19 p.m., he called 911 from a nearby inn to report she had been found, unresponsive, in the water on the east side of Maple Falls, near highway milepost 27. He and a friend had pulled the body from the shallow water, Parks said.
Investigators worked through the night. They have not said for certain how the woman died. Medical Examiner Gary Goldfogel said it's too early to say whether she drowned.
The official cause of death is pending toxicology tests and further investigation, but nobody has been accused of a crime.
Cowles and her husband lived out of the pickup truck. She was a resident of Whatcom County for well over a decade.
