A Western Washington University rally fell short in a 4-3 loss to Simon Fraser University in the semifinals of the Bronze Bracket at the Tournament of Champions, but the Vikings overcame a six-run deficit in a non-tourney game to defeat San Francisco State University, 8-7, on Sunday, April 7, in Turlock, Calif.
WWU, 18-20, trailed Simon Fraser (20-16), 4-1, after the Clan scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Vikings scored an unearned run in the sixth on a double steal and were within one after Cheyenne Best doubled in a run with two outs in the seventh. But Simon Fraser relief pitcher Kelsie Hawkins, who earned a save, retired the next hitter on a fly out.
WWU's Jordan Walley was 3 for 3, doubling home a run in the first. Anisa Wingsness had 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Vikings.
Against SFSU (15-25), the Vikings were behind 7-1 after the Gators scored four runs in the top of the sixth.
