BELLINGHAM - Parks and recreation insiders have been planning a 45-mile loop trail in north Whatcom County for years, and the public can learn about it at an open house Wednesday, April 10.
The meeting will be 7 to 9 p.m. at Squalicum Boathouse in Zuanich Point Park. A map showing the proposed route will be displayed.
The map is not meant to pinpoint the trail's location but to provide a suggestion, said Lauren Erickson, executive coordinator of Whatcom Parks and Recreation Foundation. The foundation wants public input on the route, a version of which is at nooksacklooptrail.org.
The trail, intended to connect Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden and Everson, won't be completed overnight - and probably not in the next decade, Erickson said.
"It's a huge undertaking," she said. "It's going to be cobbled together piece by piece where opportunities come up. Where communities are more enthusiastic, it will probably happen faster."
