POINT ROBERTS - The project to build a new and larger Point Roberts Library is getting some love from a New York Times best-selling author best known for writing western romance novels.
Linda Lael Miller will lead a writing workshop Saturday, April 20, in Point Roberts to help raise money for the effort, followed by a book signing and meet-and-greet the same day.
The author, dubbed the "First Lady of the West," is coming to Point Roberts at the request of a longtime friend and library backer.
"Linda Miller and I both come from the Spokane area and have been personal friends for over 40 years," Jean Barrington, a member of the Friends of the Point Roberts Library, said in an email interview. "She and I both love libraries, so when I asked if she would help us build our new one by doing a workshop, she graciously agreed."
The Friends of the Point Roberts Library is raising up to $500,000 to renovate the old Julius Fire Hall into a new home for the library. The money would cover the estimated cost of renovating the fire hall, as well as permits and fees.
The library now has a 900-square-foot space in Point Roberts Community Center, 1487 Gulf Road. The fire hall is next door. Under current plans, its renovation would double the space for the library.
The library group has raised about $130,000 so far. Meanwhile, a matching grant of $117,500 would allow the community to double up - raising a total of another $235,000, according to Judy Ross, also a member of the group.
"Individuals, groups, organizations and local businesses have been very supportive," Ross said in an email interview of the money raised so far. "We have undertaken this task with the strong belief that, 'It takes a community to build a library.' And that is also becoming the reality."
