The Quileute Tribal School and the Quileute Tribe are hosting the sixth annual Welcoming the Whales on Wednesday. The yearly event honors the role of whales within the Quileute culture. The celebration is open to the public.
It will run from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at First Beach and then the Akalat Center in La Push.
At the beach, the event will begin at 10 a.m. At the center, activities begin at 1 p.m. and include a meal, singing and storytelling.
During April and May, gray whales migrating north from waters off the Baja Peninsula in Mexico to Arctic waters off Alaska pass through the near-shore waters, feeding on the nutrient-rich sediments of First Beach.
