BELLINGHAM - Registrations are being accepted for free screenings for oral, head and neck cancer at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center.
Screenings will take place 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20, at the center, 3301 Squalicum Parkway. Doctors will conduct 10-minute, painless examinations.
Early detection of the cancers leads to easier treatments and higher survival rates.
People who use tobacco and alcohol have traditionally been considered at greatest risk for the cancers. But oral cancer is rising among younger nonsmokers, partly due to the increasing incidence of the human papillomavirus, better known as HPV.
Registration is required; call the center at 360-788-8226.
