I have been a registered nurse at St. Joseph Hospital for over 12 years and am deeply concerned about the choices PeaceHealth executives are making regarding the nurses and other employees at the hospital. We have been told that these benefit cuts and changes to the nurse's contract are in the interest of sustainability. Ask yourself this question: How can a non-profit Catholic hospital be choosing to make growth and financial gain the priority over the people that are effectively out on the front lines caring for the patients? We are there day in day out dedicating ourselves to the care and comfort of this community. The decision of the executive team to balance the budget on the backs of the nurses and other employees will send a message to the community that PeaceHealth is an organization that values money and the almighty dollar over the safety and care of its employees. The executives of PeaceHealth should set an example by choosing to support the nurses and employees of PeaceHealth rather than continuing to channel resources into growth or high-paid executive salaries. To the Whatcom community at large: Please help the WSNA nurses by letting the executives of PeaceHealth know that you support the nurses in their effort to retain quality care for themselves and for the community.
